What is an Ankle Sprain?

Acute ankle sprains are one the most common sports-related injuries and result in wide degrees of disability. If you have had an ankle injury once, you are nearly twice as likely to re-injure it again.

Three ligaments comprise the lateral ligamentous complex of the ankle. The anterior talofibular ligament, the calcaneofibular ligament and the posterior talofibular ligament. When one of these ligaments are stretched or torn, a "sprained" ankle is the result.
